Listen...

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is experiential theological education designed to improve the quality of pastoral care offered by spiritual caregivers of all faiths and levels of experience. The Upstate Medical University CPE Program in Syracuse, New York, is accredited through the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and led by the Reverend Terry Ruth Culbertson, MDIV, BCC, CT, an ACPE Certified Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor. Our program uses an action-reflection model of learning that integrates the components of spiritual care, personal and theological reflection, supervision, peer review and supportive group process.

A Unique Learning Opportunity

As a Chaplain Intern in our program, you will become part of an interdisciplinary care team that serves hospitalized patients and their loved ones. This direct service facilitates the application of learned theory and your own personal and pastoral experiences as you minister to patients, families and staff. As a result, you will develop a new awareness of yourself that strengthens your spiritual care. Your learning will also be enhanced through active participation in teaching didactics, clinical presentations and the rich resources of a teaching hospital. Learn more about our unique learning opportunities and what our alumni/ae say about the program.

Level I & Level II CPE

Our program is comprehensive, offering the opportunity to complete both Level I and Level II CPE units as part of the requirements to become a Board Certified Chaplain. Learn more about CPE levels and becoming a Board Certified Chaplain.

Two Sessions a Year

Our program offers two sessions a year. Each is 400 hours – 300 hours of direct ministry and 100 hours of instruction. Training groups are limited to six students. There is a 32-week extended session that begins in September and a 12-week intensive summer session that begins the third week of May. Applications are due by June 1st for the extended session and January 31st for the intensive summer session. Learn more about our program requirements and how to apply.
